Pittsburgh premiere
of a poetry and music collaboration, sometimes
poignant, sometimes
strident, often hilarious. Winds composer-in-residence R. James
Whipple weaves music between the poems of Samuel Hazo’s book, The
Marriage Dialogues, read by actors Kate Young and Jeff Howell. The
program also includes an instrumental trio by Walter Piston and
songs on James Joyce by the late Colin Sterne, a Pittsburgh composer
and Pitt professor once an active member of the city’s musical life.

WORLD PREMIERE
Eric Barndollar: Wind Quintet
Wind quintet program features the dynamic Six
Bagatelles of Georgi Ligeti and the Quintet Op. 88 No. 2 by Anton Reicha,
a Classical gem by the inventor of the wind quintet. Continuing their
tradition of showcasing regional composers, the Winds will premiere a
new work by Pittsburgh composer Eric Barndollar.

Beth Etter joins the Winds for a cheerful evening of musicmaking that
spans the seventeenth to twentieth centuries. The Baroque selections
range from a quartet sonata of Handel and a Bach flute sonata to an
exquisite canzona by Frescobaldi and elegant keyboard pieces by Rameau
and François Couperin. A special treat is R. James Whipple’s unique
harpsichord solo written for WQED-FM, the Time Warp Canzona. |
